Building a (decent) guitar from a Chinese kit...

So, I decided to try my hand at building my own guitar.  I've been playing guitar for 26 years, but I've never done any real setup or maintenance work on any of my guitars.  I decided to change that last year when my old Stratocaster developed a warped neck.  I took it in to my local guitar tech, and he said the neck was too far gone (the truss rod was also broken) and recommended I just replace it.  I bought a new Mighty Mite neck for about $200 and had him install it and set it up for me.

I was never really happy with the guitar after that, though.  It just didn't feel right.  Once I started reading up on it, I decided to try and tweak it a bit and after some trial and error, I actually ended up with a guitar I'm happy with again.  This lead to me buying a cheap Ibanez Talman acoustic on eBay and doing a full fret job, upgrading the nut and bridge, and doing a full setup.  It's now my backup acoustic, and I play it pretty regularly at home.  The electronics aren't great, but I'll get to those one day.  After these successes, I decided it's time to build something of my own.  I may be crazy.

The picture above is the body and pickguard of a super cheap Chinese 12 string Telecaster kit I bought on eBay.  It was the last one in stock and it was heavily discounted, so I pulled the trigger.  I had been watching them for awhile, and when this one got marked down, I bought it.

I've always wanted a 12 string electric, so we'll see how this goes...
